Reuters —Protests in Peru are blocking access to Machu Picchu, one of South America’s most popular heritage sites, with local anger over a new ticketing system halting rail transport to the iconic Incan site and leaving some tourists stranded. The protests, which began late last week, have left hundreds of tourists, who flock to Machu Picchu from all over the world, unable to reach the site. WASHINGTON (AP) — Archeologists have uncovered a cluster of lost cities in the Amazon rainforest that was home to at least 10,000 farmers around 2,000 years ago. A series of earthen mounds and buried roads in Ecuador was first noticed more than two decades ago by archaeologist Stéphen Rostain. “It was a lost valley of cities," said Rostain, who directs investigations at France’s National Center for Scientific Research. The largest roads were 33 feet (10 meters) wide and stretched for 6 to 12 miles (10 to 20 kilometers). “There’s always been an incredible diversity of people and settlements in the Amazon, not only one way to live,” said Rostain.

Studies have revealed that Juanita was a healthy girl between 13 and 15 when she died from a blow to the head. Nilsson used tissue depth markers based on the measurements of her skull to envision the proportions of her face, which included high cheekbones. Tissue depth markers and CT scans helped Oscar Nilsson reconstruct the Ice Maiden's face. For the researchers who have spent years studying Juanita, the arduous process to bring her back to life was worth it.

LIMA, Sep 6 (Reuters) - Archaeologists in Peru have unearthed a 1,000-year-old mummy in the latest discovery at an archaeological site located in a residential neighborhood of the country's capital, Lima. The remains were found alongside ceramic vessels, textiles and other objects in the Huaca Pucllana site in the middle of Lima's affluent Miraflores district, the head of the team of archaeologists, Mirella Ganoza, told Reuters on Wednesday. "This is an adult individual in a sitting position with bent legs," the expert said, noting that the mummy had long hair and a jaw that was nearly completely intact. Mummies and ancient offerings have already been found in the Huaca Pucllana site, and experts see the site as a Pandora's Box with much more to be found.
